Seiko Instruments recently refreshed its Smart Label Printer line with devices that are not only compatible with Macintosh as well as Windows, but also have a more Mac-like look. It takes only a few seconds, for example, to switch from CD labels to address labels or continuous-feed labels. Another advantage to the Brother QL-500 is that the stock comes in cartridges that are easy to change. By that time, I was ready for a new message anyway.

A manual built-in paper cutter cuts labels to the proper length when printed. A 100-foot roll of that paper costs about $12, or about a penny an inch. Most of the time I just use Brother's narrowest (11/7 inch) continuous-feed paper, which works for address labels, file folders and most other uses. The software automatically senses the label type and adjusts accordingly. In addition to accepting several sizes and styles of die-cut labels, it also accepts continuous-feed paper (including more expensive coated "film" paper, though not laminated stock) up to 2.4 inches wide. At under $90 with reasonably priced label stock, it is also economical. The Brother QL-500 is the most versatile label printer on the market. With this printer, you could immediately switch from address labels to CD labels, for example, without having to replace label stock. The LabelWriter Twin Turbo ($160) has two spools for die-cut paper labels, and its software has a setting that allows you to switch between them. Removing one set of labels and replacing it with another is not difficult, but can take a bit of time.ĭymo makes two machines that take two types of stock at a time. Once you load a specific label stock in the machine, you can print only that type until you change the stock. Label printers use special stock that comes in rolls. So before using a dedicated label printer to create multiple labels, consider the cost of label stock. While you'll never have to buy ink, you will have to buy label stock once you run out of the supply that comes with the printer. Still, as with all printers, your cost of ownership isn't limited to your initial investment. There are no ink cartridges to buy or manage.
